Touch driven computer screens

09th January 2007

I posted in my quick links section earlier to a youtube video where a research scientist demonstrated a touch driven computer screen. Well I decided I can’t just leave it as a quick link and want to talk a little bit more about it as I was so blown away by it all. An interface like this would take the digital art industry to a completely different level but just imagine if/when something like this was part of our everyday lives.

Just imagine having interfaces all around the house controlling various things such as our TVs, fridges, ovens, baths or showers. Want to turn the oven temperature up a bit? No problem, just drag your finger along your nifty little touch screen and bobs your cousin’s dad. How about selecting TV channels? You’re sat down in your lazy boy chair with your touch screen controller sat next to you with small previews of various channels which are all playing. You can zoom in and around the all 100,000 channels, move them about and even group them together. It would be absolutely amazing.

Using technology like this in the digital art industry would also be great and would make things such as 3D modeling, animation, design and even sound editing so much better. Being able to manipulate a 3D model you are creating with your hands would really make you feel like your crafting it by hand and that your really involved with the whole process. Being able to create a drum loop by tapping on the screen. Creating animations by hand. All of this would bring a great deal more of control to the creator.

It’s just a shame to think how far off this is all from actually happening but this video definitely gets you thinking. Link found on Chris Blunt’s website.
